From The City to The Classroom Success Story > From: Job To: Job From The City to The Classroom “I gained less job satisfaction as the years went on. I felt that I wanted to give something back to society.” * From The City to The Classroom Fergal Moane's financial career was fast-paced and interesting. He travelled in first class, lunched at top restaurants and enjoyed a salary to match. But the banking crisis made him realise something was missing. Find out how a local rugby club helped him find his new calling, and how he made it happen. What work were you doing previously? Before getting into teaching, I worked in investment banking. After graduation, I worked for Goldman Sachs in London as a programmer analyst. My responsibilities grew, over a fifteen-year period, into team, project and programme management for a variety of top-tier banks, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and Lehman Brothers. I also spent time working in both Sydney and New York. What are you doing now? I'm Assistant Headteacher at Sandringham School, St. Albans. I teach Computer Science and am also in charge of Initial Teacher Training and Strategic IT for the school. Why did you change? The financial crisis in 2008 made me question my motivation and purpose. Although investment banking was always fast-paced and interesting work, I gained less job satisfaction as the years went on. I felt that I wanted to give something back to society. When was the moment you decided to make the change? I decided to become a teacher after working with young people as a coach for a junior rugby team. I realised, during that time, that I enjoyed working with young people much more, and that the personal rewards, such as seeing the team learn and grow, were much more satisfying than the monetary rewards from a career in the financial sector. Are you happy with the change? Yes. The great thing about teaching is that the career progression opportunities are great, with a no-barriers structure. So long as you have the skills, there are all sorts of opportunities to progress within your career. After completing my training, I was head of a department after two years and an Assistant Headteacher in four. Being able to create a lasting impact on students, providing inspiration for the subject and their future careers, is just so rewarding. What do you miss and what don't you miss? I don't miss the commute! I can walk to work and don't miss the cattle trains into London early morning and late evening. I do sometimes miss some of the perks of banking â€" international travel, first-class flights and nice lunches! How did you go about making the shift? I found out about the School Direct route into teaching through the National College for Teaching and Leadership at a recruitment event in London. I followed this route, training at Roundwood Park School, Harpenden. I also took part in the Schools Experience Programme across a range of schools. The School Direct route was great for me, as (unlike the university-led Postgraduate Certificate in Education route) it meant I didn't have to go back to an educational setting to study. It's a brilliant scheme and I felt it allowed me to become part of the community in teaching. What didn't go well? What 'wrong turns' did you take? The amount of time and energy that the job takes has been a real eye-opener. Choosing teaching is definitely not a 'lifestyle' choice. There is always more that can be done, so I've had to be very organised, managing my time carefully. How did you handle your finances to make your change possible? This was definitely a challenge, as there's obviously a significant pay differential to banking. My partner was supportive and went back to work, and there were a few years of very careful financial management! That said, there are now significant bursaries and scholarships available for shortage subjects (up to £25,000 tax free) or the School Direct (salaried) programme for career changers, where you are employed by the school and paid to train. What was the most difficult thing about changing? Developing the confidence to stand up in front of, and inspire, 30 expectant faces, five times a day! What help did you get? I've found that the best way to learn is by observation. I picked up so much more from watching great teachers than I could get from reading a textbook or sitting in a lecture theatre. The Schools Experience Programme was also great for trying out the classroom environment. In the School Direct route, the support I got from Subject Mentors was very personalised and I was able to progress at my own pace. I attended school trips and staff training, too. The overall route was supportive, offered greater independence, and provided opportunities to get straight into the classroom and build relationships. The National College of Teaching and Leadership offers a whole range of support, including advisers available for you at each stage of your teacher training application. What have you learnt in the process? I've come to understand a lot about how children all learn differently. I've even felt inspired to do further research in this area; I'm completing a part-time Master's degree in Education at the University of Hertfordshire. What do you wish you'd done differently? Although working at your local school has advantages, there are some downsides to seeing your students out in town. Perhaps I could have aimed to teach in an area a little further away from where I live! What would you advise others to do in the same situation? I would recommend teaching to those who are interested in working with young people: the rewards are limitless. So long as you have the motivation, it's a great job because of the variety. It's like performing, yet you're not only the actor â€" you're also the scriptwriter, producer, designer and stage manager! What resources would you recommend to others? How to make business travel manageable Last year I traveled almost every week. Some weeks I traveled to three different cities. If you are excited about business travel, thinking its a free ticket to see the world, you should stop reading now. But if you are having trouble maintaining your personal life in the face of tons of travel, these tips from a cynical traveler will make life easier for you. 1. Stick with your priorities. When people travel to another city, why do they throw out their to do list for sightseeing in random museums? If you have on your top three things you want in life: go to the gym, stay in touch with friends, read a book a week, then sightseeing is not on the list. You dont need to do it when you travel. You need to stick to your priorities. If sightseeing is on your priority list, then get a new job, because you have no control over where you sightsee if you have a job with a lot of travel. 2. Eat really well. First of all, youre not paying for your own food, so you should eat really good, healthy food, which is always more expensive than junk food. Second, if you have a rule for yourself that you always eat well when you travel, then you will actually be healthier from traveling. Most people eat crap when they travel because they are tired and they feel like the calories dont count because they are across state lines. That attitude will make you burn out faster. I cant find a link but Im sure theres a study to support the hypothesis that you deal with the stress of travel more effectively without McDonalds. 3. Think of balance in terms of weeks, not days. I know I want to spend time with the Farmer, spend time with the kids, be around for dinner invitations, and tooth-fairy moments. I used to worry about this every day. If I didnt have breakfast with the kids, then I had to have dinner. Now I think in terms of weeks. If I was gone all week, I take off a day from work to have extra time for my personal life. If you are good at your job, and you travel a lot, no one counts how many days you take off. 4. Get elite status. Somewhere. Anywhere. When everyone is staying overnight at OHare, the people who are platinum are getting rebooked first. When you are waiting on the tarmac for an hour at LaGuardia because air traffic control cannot remember how many planes are in the air (which, really, is like, every day) if you get upgraded to first class, youre drinking free wine and eating firm grapes while you are a prisoner of the airport. To get elite status, it means that every time your company wants to save $50 to put you on another airline, you have to say no. If my company will save more than $300, Ill travel on an airline that I am not platinum on. Make sure your company knows youre doing them a favor. 5. Do not agree to stupid meetings for geographical reasons. Just because someone you never want to hang out with lives in Saskatchewan and youre gonna be there doesnt mean that all of a sudden you should hang out with him. You have a life. And you surely have stuff you can do that evening besides hang out with a loser. Or maybe hes only a half-loser. The thing is, you dont have time for half-losers at home. They are the same everywhere: Still just a distraction from the real work of living the life you want. The bottom line is that you need to respect your life. Your life cannot be on hold while you travel. The travel, if its really frequent, sort of is your life. So the values you havebe spiritual, be frugal, be healthyhave to prevail during your travel. This is not vacation travel. This is not a vacation from your life. Business travel IS your life.

A company will ultimately be limited in its successes if employers find the workplace unpleasant, negative or stressful. Yet fostering and maintaining a positive work environment can be tricky, especially when finding a balance and not ending up being underproductive and unprofessional. Here are some tips to get that balance right. 1. Remember Everyone Is Human Human beings are inherently flawed â€" they are not machines or resources for your company. Accept some level of mistakes and oversights, or risk feeling constantly frustrated at the work produced, even if everyone is genuinely trying their best. Make sure you allow some flexibility and work/life balance for your employees to avoid them resenting their work. A level of respect back and forth is key to a pleasant office environment. 2. Recognise and Draw Attention to Achievements People will be less likely to want to work hard if their achievements are not celebrated. If the only time attention is drawn to somebody’s work is when it’s negative, people won’t see any motivation to give something there all. Make sure you notice hard work â€" and let people know their efforts are not in vain. 3. Don’t Micromanage Giving employees some level of independence is hugely important. It will make them feel trusted to do a good job, rather than unimportant and like their views don’t matter. In turn, this will allow creativity to flourish. When empowered in this way, employees are likely to work both harder and smarter. 4. Avoid Scare Tactics An environment of fear is one of the worst places to work productively and positively. Try to instill in employees that mistakes are just opportunities and that taking risks should not be frightening. The ability to try and fail without fear will undoubtedly result in some surprising and innovative successes. 5. Be a Mentor If you aren’t micromanaging and are allowing your employees more freedom with their work, you’ll likely have more time on your hands, too. Use this time both to innovate new ideas, and act as a coach to your employees. Offer your expertise and advice without over-asserting authority, and instill confidence in your team. 6. Invest in Training One of the best uses for company budget is in training. Workplace success depends on individual employee success, and the best way to allow employees to flourish is by giving them what they need in a consistent way. 7. Check in with Employees If you’re feeling unsure about the workplace environment, you can always ask. Reviewing what employees think and working things around them will keep them both happy and productive. Feeling like your opinions matter and issues will be taken into account is key to feeling positive about your work environment. Bradens Hire Me Campaign When Braden noticed Krispy Kreme was hiring for a Sales Marketing Manager, he saw an incredible opportunity to sweet talk the company through a creative Hire Me campaign. Genius!  Cornz is smiling! Braden explains his thought process further, Krispy Kreme Philly is very productive within social media, so I was positive one of their employees would eventually see my campaign. It just felt like a simple way to put myself out there and gain support from my network.
